Paid Remote Community Engagement Internship Announcement
Summer and/or Fall 2019
The Music of Asian America Research Center (MAARC) seeks a paid intern that will work for a total of 330 hours between June 15 and November 30, 2019. This is a contract position at $15/hour with no benefits. The start/finish date and the exact work plan are negotiable. MAARC is based in Burlington, New Jersey, but this internship will be completed remotely. The position is funded by a grant from the Society for American Archivists Foundation. Upon successful completion of the internship, additional part-time contractor hours may are possible, but not guaranteed. The intern must provide their own computer and cell phone. Upon approval from the intern’s university, this internship may be completed for credit.
The primary responsibility of the intern to help the Executive Director launch MAARC’s “Documenting Asian American Community Music Ensembles” (DAACME) initiative. DAACME seeks to document amateur music-making in Asian American communities and to explore how various Asian American populations use music to preserve ancestral cultures, adapt to life in the United States, create space in local music ecosystems and racial landscapes, and reject elements of homeland cultures. Responsibilities:
- Locating and communicating with Asian American community music ensembles
- Locating collections that include information about Asian American music in archives across North America
- Updating spreadsheets on community music ensembles and archival collections
- Other duties are assigned based on the skills and interests of the intern
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a humanities or performing arts field
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Familiarity with Asian American history
- Commitment to cultural competence and inclusion
Desired Qualifications:
- Fluency in an Asian language other than Chinese
- Educational background in music, oral history, and/or archives
